evil:austria 0205

Welcome to a new edition of evil:austria!

The year 2005 has been declared a jubilee-year, in which the celebration of liberation, reconstruction and EU- membership seem mandatory for the Austrian population. So, this edition of evil:austria concentrates on the activities, government and civil-society have arranged for our commemorative pleasure. We also would like to point out, that this issue is a new try of ours to get the english edition of evil:austria (or at least parts of it) rolling again, for the last two years unfortunately there were only german issues. If you want to help us out in translating, it would be great if you could contact us.

And now a short explanation (for the newcomers) of what this newsletter should be and why we write it: evil:austria is our monthly newsletter providing information about the situation in Austria (and regarding the consequences of FPOe/OeVP government). We decided to produce this newsletter since we realised that knowledge regarding the actual situation in Austria is not very widespread abroad. The government, after discussions about EU-"sanctions" against Austria were dropped, succeeded in removing the daily insanity from the attention of the international public. Meanwhile "sanctions" have been lifted, which almost all political groups here celebrated as a victory, and the "interest" taken in the development in Austria has decreased even more. The "normalisation" of the right-wing/right-extreme government continues, and therefore information about the aggravation of the situation in Austria is even more important. It is therefore highly desired that you spread this newsletter as widely as possible, so that as many people as possible get to know about the situation in Austria. So please spread, spread, spread this. Of course you may also use this material (also in excerpts) for magazines and papers, but we would be glad if you sent us a short mail in this case.

Any criticism and comments please send to (if possible, please write in German or English):

To everyones surprise minister of the interior Ernst Strasser declared his resignation on December 10th - only days after announcing plans for an even more severe asylum-law. - Before, the federal constitutional court had rejected parts of the bill for being incompatible with human rights. Chancellor Schuessel, though also caught off guard by the resignation, knew at once what to do: The minister of the defence took over the agendas of the interior, at least provisionally. The two departments match well, since both are responsible for some shooting. Also, in the 90ies the FPOE already demanded such a "security-ministery".

However soon a new minister was found: early in january Liese Prokop, formerly in the government of Lower-Austria and ex-pentathlete was presented as a new "humane" discovery for this office. Promptly, Prokop announced a "humane asylum-policy".

Late in january Herbert Haupt, friend of hyppopotamusses and "Sudetendeutsche" expellees, retired as minister for social affairs. Succeding him in office is Jörg Haiders sister Ursula Haubner who already replaced him as party-leader half a year ago. Haupt, making headlines with a so called "ministry for men" and some spectacular car crashes was resigning for reasons of poor health. He'll stay with us as a plain member of parliament.

The jubilee year 2005 holds Austria in its firm grip: half a century of liberation - from the allied forces of course - just has to be celebrated. All too clear were the statements - at least of one of the ruling parties - concerning the classification of the year 1945: it is judged as defeat. Now 25 projects ("25 peaces") realized on public places in Austria are intended to bring certain historic facts to the awareness of our youth. Provided with big financial support and rather dilettante planning, two eventmanagers running amok - Wolfgang Lorenz of Austrian television and Georg Springer - are responsible for the conception of these witty and "provocative" projects.

One example: On March 12 the pair plans to restage allied bombings with audio-installations and blazing lightbeams. Presented were the projects on the 27th of january - the day of the liberation of Auschwitz. - A scheduling error, the team apologized. At least after the press conference the hungry were treated to Knoedels like in the old days of the occupation.

[3] let's celebrate, this party's over, I'm going home

The president of parliament Andreas Khol (OEVP) commented on the jubilee 2005: In answering the question, who were the central figures in the reconstruction and in the success-story of Austria's post-war years, he named Schaerf, Hurdes, Raab, Kreisky, Pittermann plus the former FP-chairman and SS-Obersturmfuehrer Friedrich Peter, as well as one party - the VdU.

The VdU (Association of Independents) was founded in 1949 as a reservoir for nazis - and not just those 700.000, that were members of the NSDAP before '45. 1956 the FPOE took over from the VdU. In these days of celebration one thing is remembered for sure: The sacrifices made by the good people of Austria in rebuilding the country (on the foundation of forced labour, dispossesion/"Arisierungen" and the murder of millions).

In the summer of 2002 Binali Ilter, suffering of schizophrenia, was shot when he threatened several policemen with a bottle of water (0.33l). The death was caused by two "unaimed shots at the body" fired by one officer. Now the officer was acquitted of manslaughter. In his verdict (not final) the judge just stated a certain lack of police-training. There was also no charge for failing to render first aid to the deadly wounded Binali.

After the sentence, the brother of Binali - Ismael Ilter- talked in a pub of using all means in fighting the verdict. Viennese police promptly responded by arresting him: At the conversation an informer had supposedly overheard a plot to murder the police officer. As the criminal investigators were not able to verify their claims, they had to let Ismael go the next day.

[5] Moelzer

Andreas Moelzer - EU-parlamentarian for the Freedomparty, columnist for the "Krone", editor of "Zur Zeit" and central figure in Austria's revisionist and revanchist circles - left the assembly when the EU-parliament passed a resolution against antisemitism and xenophobia on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Today's Austria had no responsibility for the crimes of Auschwitz, said Moelzer. Just like the german NPD he demanded to honour the 250.000 (sic!) dead of Dresden instead.

As revisionism and structural denial of the Shoa are part of the official program for the Austria's 2005-commemorative activities, partyleader and Haider's sister Ursula Haubner had no cause for rebuking her comrade in Brussels. She saw " no brown spots in the FPOE". She also happened to mention that one should take care that "what has happened between '38 and '45, will not happen again."

True enough: Somewhere something happened to someone.

Viennese FPOE -Chairman Heinz Christian Strache - a member of the Burschenschaft (students association) Vandalia - survived his duel unwounded. As a man of honour - he's known for speechifying on the Remembrance-Day of the extreme right/ the day of the defeat of the Reich - he had to challenge to a duel with sabres a Salzburgian physician for being criticized by him. The handsome lad (tall, slim, blue eyes, favorite read: Ernst Juengers "Der Waldgang", favorite actors: Romy Schneider, Brad Pitt) didn't really have to fear for his life or his good looks, for being without highschool-diploma and being frowned upon by his comrades in the academic Burschenschaft, he was only permitted to fight a so called "Contrahage" or "Biermops" (Burschenlingua), where the sabre is blunt and head and neck are protected.

Nonetheless Strache took the challenge seriously. while in austria the art of fencing became a big issue, he took to his training in the US - in Disneyland. Back from the states he stated "I'm the Zorro of internal affairs" and gave the advice to youth to keep to "sports not drugs". Eventually the duel was faught on neutral grounds in Upper-Austria. Strache concluded: "There hadn't been any losers, only two winners".

But now the question remains - who is right?

In Austria periodicals that promote the "civic education" get press-subsidy. Two of the far right magazines that always got their monetary support in the past, lost theirs for 2004 - the "Eckart "(formerly "Eckartbote") and "Aula".

But there's no cause for concern for democratic culture: others like the "Sudetenpost" and "Zur Zeit" still get subsidized.
